Otters Amuse Area Landowners

Otter on dock in Va BeachRussell Thorne lives in Jonathan's Cove on the Virginia Beach side of the Eastern Branch.  He photographed this otter doing what a lot of us enjoy doing on a sunny Sunday afternoon: just chillin' out.

Earlier this year Russell saw a group of five otters--two adults and three young--at the same location. The adults jumped up on the pier. The little ones swam around for a bit, seeming unable to manage the jump. The adults soon got back into the water and swam away with the young ones. "Of course, I didn't have my camera!", says Russell.  We hate when that happens!

Otters only frequent rivers where conditions are improving enough for them to find food and shelter!  Find out how you can help improve these conditions. Get a copy of our wildlife habitat guide, too, and enjoy more wildlife in your backyard!

Let us know if you spot an otter. Send us your best photos, (put Otter Photos in the subject line of your email) along with the place, date and details of your sighting, and your name, of course, and we'll do our best to share as many as possible online!

Join with other Otter Spotters and help track their comeback.

Thanks for sharing, Russell!
