River Star Homes Seasonal Staff

SUMMARY

The Elizabeth River Project, one of the oldest environmental nonprofits on the Chesapeake Bay, seeks a part-time, seasonal hire (20 to 28 hours/week) at a rate of $12/hr. to work with our River Star Homes Program, a free program in which citizens commit to 7 behavior changes. The position will run April 12th through September 30th, 2021. The staff will work with homeowners in the Elizabeth River watershed to implement river friendly practices, including living shorelines, oyster reefs, rain gardens, and more. RESPONSIBILITIES

The River Star Homes Seasonal Staff will work directly with the River Star Homes Program Manager and Assistant Director of Restoration as part of our River Star Homes Program. The top priorities will be to 1) implement on-the-ground improvements to help homeowners reduce their environmental impact on the Elizabeth River. The Seasonal Staff will work with other Elizabeth River Project team members to install sand and wetland grasses to create living shorelines, build oyster reefs, install rain barrels and construct rain gardens; 2) maintain a safe work environment for all staff and volunteers; 3) educate the public and recruit River Star Homes at outreach events throughout the area; 4) complete additional cross-training as time allows with restoration planning, shoreline permitting, educational events, and more.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Strong “customer service” skills. Must be prompt and professional at all times.
  • Must be capable of performing tasks in accordance with safety standards and rules.
  • Candidates should be a strong team player and show genuine commitment to the mission of the Elizabeth River Project.
  • An interest in environmental stewardship and sustainable landscaping practices.
  • A “can do” positive attitude is essential, including the ability to grow from feedback and work closely with a team.
  • Candidate should be comfortable working within and around water.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft office suite including Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Basic landscaping capabilities – shoveling, wheelbarrowing, raking. Etc.
  • Capable of lifting and carrying objects up to 35 pounds.
  • Candidates should be comfortable working with the public and educating homeowners about best environmental practices.
  • Must have reliable transportation.
  • Flexible schedule recommended.
  • Candidates with immediate availability preferred.
