Volunteer Opportunities

Paradise Creek Nature Park offers a variety of volunteer opportunities throughout the year. Over 2,000 adults and children have helped remove invasive plants, planted native trees, weeded garden beds, removed trash from the trails and wetland, and helped maintain education zones throughout the park.

Safety Protocols for Public Programs Events.

In order to ensure the safety of staff and guests these guidelines will be followed at all times:

  • All programs are conducted outdoors, weather permitting 
  • Pre-registration only, no registrations accepted on day of program
  • Number of guests are 8 per program.
  • Guests will verify they are in good health and not experiencing any COVID-19 symptoms 
  • Guests will wear appropriate facemask, if not fully vaccinated. 
  • Port-a-potties available. No public access will be given to the River Academy. 

 

4-Week FOREST SCHOOL at Paradise Creek Nature Park!

Dates: Wed. and Thurs. beginning Oct 6 & 7.

Times: 10-11:30 or 1-2:30

Age: Preschool-2nd Grade!

Join us for the FALL 2021 Forest School Program for preschool-2nd grade aged children. Youth will feel care-free and energized as they participate in our once a week , hour and a half outdoor program where they will celebrate the trees, birds and sunshine with a sense of wonder. We will play safe and follow COVID protocol while taking time to engineer stick sculptures, skip, hop and walk like animals as we go crossing over the river and through the woods. Children will plant native seeds for the birds, create nature-themed art and learn about the habitat around them at Paradise Creek Nature Park. Forest school is an inspirational program that offers all learners opportunities to achieve and develop confidence and self-esteem through woodlands and natural environment. Activities will help foster resilience, confidence and enthusiasm to be outdoors and includes a range of activities from energetic games, calmer crafts and social tasks such as foraging and building.

Parents are encouraged to stay as we provide activities and educators to lead the program. Participants will be divided into three small groups of 8 students plus 1 parent/guardian per student/family.

COVID protocols: Masks are required for all age. FREE Blue Crab masks will be given to all youth participants. All current government guidance will be followed including distancing, small group sizes and limited shared equipment. Please arrive 15 minutes early the first day to complete a COVID waiver. No indoor restroom facilities available. 2 well maintained portapotties and hand sanitizer and portable hand wash station onsite.

COST: $40 per child for the 4 week session plus small Eventbrite fee. Scholarships may be available

WEATHER: We will reschedule if extreme weather but will hold the program if light rain.

Family Nature Walks

Dates: September 18

Time: 10:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. 

Age: All ages, children accompained by adults.

Cost: FREE REGISTRATION REQUIRED Register online HERE or at paradisecreek.elizabethriver.org.

Discover the wonders of Paradise Creek! Take a walk through the park with Ranger Seana to learn about our birds and look for signs of wildlife. Wear comfortable shoes and dress for the weather.

  • Guests will need to wear a face mask, if not fully vaccinated and will be required to verify they are in good health and not experiencing any Covid symptoms.
  • All programs are conducted outdoors, weather permitting. 
  • Maximum 8 guests, pre-registration only, no registerations accepted on day of program.  
  • Port-a-potties available. No public access will be given to the River Academy. 

 


Meet the Critters

Dates:  September 4. 

Time: 11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. 

Age: all ages, children accompained by adults

Cost: FREE -  REGISTRATION REQUIRED - Register online HERE or at paradisecreek.elizabethriver.org.

Join Ranger Seana, as we get close and personal with our marsh critters. Participants with be able to touch, feel and observe periwinkles, fiddler crabs, fish and other critters. Wear comfortable shoes and dress for the weather.

  • All programs are conducted outdoors, weather permitting. 
  • Maximum 8 guests, pre-registration only, no registerations accepted on day of program.

Summer Bird Walk

Date: September 18.

Time: 8:30 a.m. – 10:00 a.m.

Age: 16 and Above

Cost: $5.00 -  REGISTRATION REQUIRED - Register online HERE or at paradisecreek.elizabethriver.org.

Join our Master Birder and observe some of the many birds that stop at our park. More than 160 species of Birds have been identified at Paradise Creek Nature Park.

  • Guests will need to wear a face mask, if not fully vaccinated and will be required to verify they are in good health and not experiencing any Covid symptoms.
  • All programs are conducted outdoors, weather permitting. 
  • Maximum 8 guests, pre-registration only, no registerations accepted on day of program.  
  • Port-a-potties available. No public access will be given to the River Academy. 

Herb Collection

Date: September 11 

Time: 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

Age: all ages, children accompanied by adults 

Cost $5.00 -  REGISTRATION REQUIRED - Register online HERE or at paradisecreek.elizabethriver.org.

Join Yolima Carr, Conservation Landscape Curator, to learn about foraging herbs, their medicinal properties and their meanings. Everybody will make and leave with their own herbal bouquet!

  • Guests will need to wear a face mask, if not fully vaccinated and will be required to verify they are in good health and not experiencing any Covid symptoms.
  • All programs are conducted outdoors, weather permitting. 
  • Maximum 8 guests, pre-registration only, no registerations accepted on day of program.  
  • Port-a-potties available. No public access will be given to the River Academy. 

Guided Kayak Tours 

Date: September 25 

Time: 10:00 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. 

Age: 12 and above. Ages 12-16 accompained by adults in kayak. 

Cost: $30.00 per person for ERP Members, $40.00 per person for Non ERP Members -  REGISTRATION REQUIRED - Register online HERE or at paradisecreek.elizabethriver.org.

Paddle the largest restoreed wetland in Virginia that's open for public recreation!

Fungi Program 

Date: October 23.  

Time: 9:00 a.m. – 10:3 0 a.m.

Age: all ages, children accompanied by adults

Join, Theresa Augustin, Director of Enviromental Engagement and Outreach of the Norfolk Botanical Gardens, for a fun fungi indentification at Paradise Creek!

Fall Garden Tips

Age: Adults

Join the park's horticulture team, Larry LaPell and Yolima Carr, to learn the best tips and tricks for planting, pruning, and composting your fall gardens!

Tree Identification Workshop 

Date: Saturday, October 2. 

Time: 10 a.m. - 11 a.m. 

Target Age: all ages, adults must accompany children.

Join, Dr. John Joyce, in a Paradise Creek Fall Tree Identification program! Enjoy a nice walk through the beauitful trails and learn how to identify native and invasive trees to the area and to Paradise Creek Nature Park.
