Norfolk’s Elizabeth River shows signs of recovery, but restoration work continues


The Elizabeth River is recovering after decades of pollution, but experts say community involvement is key to keeping the progress going.

Once declared “dead” in the 1920s, the Elizabeth River, which winds through the heart of Norfolk, is slowly being revived through decades of environmental restoration and collaboration.

According to Phoebe Murrell, Interim Director of Restoration at the Elizabeth River Project, efforts to clean up the waterway have spanned more than 30 years. “We’ve been working on it now for about three decades,” Murrell said. “Some of these branches or small tributaries had an F way back in the day, so we’ve made a lot of progress.”
