We’re inviting all River Star Home members to enter the River Star Home Flag Photo Contest — a fun way to celebrate your commitment to a cleaner, healthier Elizabeth River. Whether your flag is flying in a flourishing native garden, alongside your favorite pet, or next to a weekend cleanup crew, we want to see your creativity in action. The winning photo will be featured in our Elizabeth River Project newsletter, and the photographer will receive a free rain barrel to help take their river stewardship even further. The River Star Home Flag Photo Contest (the “Contest”) provides an exciting opportunity for participating River Star Homes with the Elizabeth River Project to showcase their River Star Home garden flag that is a visual reminder of their commitment to a healthier home river. The winning photograph will be featured in the Elizabeth River Project newsletter, and the winner will receive a rain barrel as a prize. Please review the official contest rules and guidelines below before submitting your entries.
No Entry Fee
There is no purchase, payment, or entry fee required to enter or win the contest.
Contest Period:
The contest begins on April 30, 2025, and ends on June 8, 2025, at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time. Entries submitted after this deadline will not be considered.
Eligibility:
The Contest is open to all amateur and professional photographers, including adults and youth. However, employees of the Elizabeth River Project, and their immediate family members may participate but are not eligible to win prizes. Photographs must be taken within the Elizabeth River watershed.
Number of Entries:
Each participant may submit up to three photographs. Each photograph must be submitted separately, with its own entry form.
Photo Requirements:
Photographs must be in a digital format (JPEG, JPG, or GIF), with a resolution of 2.2-8.9 megapixels (minimum 1200 x 1800 pixels) and a high resolution of 240-600 dpi. Photos should highlight the River Star Home flag in creative ways with your family, friends, pets, the river, and/or demonstrating one of the 7 steps to be a River Star Home to be considered. Photographs can be in color or black and white and can be taken in any year or season. Only digital photos will be accepted; no print or film submissions will be considered.
Submission Process:
Each photograph must be submitted with a separate entry form. Only digital submissions will be accepted, and each entry must be submitted as a separate file.
Judging and Notification
Official judging will be conducted through online voting, which will be open to the public via the Elizabeth River Project’s website. The voting period will take place from June 11, 2025, to June 22, 2025. The winner will be notified by June 24, 2025.
Contest Prize:
The winning photograph will be featured in the Elizabeth River Project newsletter. The winning photographer will receive a prize of a rain barrel.
General Conditions:
The Elizabeth River Project is not responsible for incomplete, lost, or late entries, all of which will be disqualified. Entries may also be disqualified if they are found to infringe on third-party intellectual property rights or if the photos are digitally altered beyond minor adjustments like sharpening, contrast, or color changes.
Copyright and Use:
Photographers must own the copyright to their submitted photographs and enter the contest of their own free will. By submitting an entry, photographers agree to grant the Elizabeth River Project a non-exclusive transfer of worldwide rights to use the images for promotional materials, online, and other ERP-related purposes. The Elizabeth River Project is released from any liability associated with the use of the photos.
Agreement:
By submitting an entry form and photograph, participants agree to abide by all contest rules and conditions outlined above.

Our priority is to host groups with relevance to our mission: to restore the Elizabeth River through equitable collaboration with diverse communities, governments, and businesses. When space and staff support are available, we are happy to host such groups free of charge, but do request that you consider an organizational membership and allow us to offer the opportunity for individual memberships.
