The purpose of a flood vent is to relieve hydrostatic pressure from foundation walls, which can otherwise destroy or seriously degrade a foundation wall. These are more resilient than air vents (what you often find in crawlspaces and garages) because they do not trap debris and offer superior insulation. Engineered flood vents meet regulations and performance standards, and typically fewer flood vents are required when using engineered flood vents. Residential structures are code-required to have flood vents on walls below base flood elevation (BFE), but commercial structures have the option to dry floodproof, wet floodproof (with flood vents), or both.
These are easily retrofitted into an existing structure and can be used in both residential and commercial buildings. Each engineered SmartVent serves approximately 200 sq ft of space. These have an insulation R-value of 8.34.
