Elizabeth River Project faces setback with loss of $75K federal grant

PORTSMOUTH, Va. — The Elizabeth River Project lost a major federal grant from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Chesapeake Bay-Watershed Education and Training (B-WET) program.

This funding provides hands-on conservation education to all Portsmouth Public School 6th graders, including field trips to Paradise Creek Nature Park.

For more than 30 years, The Elizabeth River Project has worked to restore waterways in Hampton Roads. It reaches four different cities, including Norfolk, Portsmouth, Chesapeake, and portions of Virginia Beach.

“So, we’ve worked very hard to clean it up, but we still have a lot more work to do,” said Lacy Shirey, Elizabeth River Project’s executive director.
